Children With Autism

Learning About Children With Autism

Children with autism exhibit signs of repetitive behaviors, delays in social interaction and impairment in communication skills. While it isn't always easy to tell if a child is autistic when they are young, most of the time these signs will show up before the child is three years old. An autistic child normally does not share the interests that other children their age have and this is actually one sign that should be watched for.

Many physicians tend to shy away from diagnosing children with autism at an early age. It is believed that many children are given such disorder labels far to early, causing them to be grouped into a certain category and not being allowed to experience the same life situations that other children would. Children do develop differently and not every child is going to go through the same changes at the same time. However, it is important that these behaviors are not overlooked.

While it is important not to diagnose a youngster as an autistic child too early, because of the possibility of error, it is also important not to miss certain symptoms of this disorder and therefore not diagnose it at all, which could be completely detrimental to the child. Early detection will allow parents to address the problems that their child may have and help them to get the services for necessary intervention. There are certain signs for parents of autistic children to look for.

Does the child respond to their name when spoken by a parent or caregiver? Most babies are responsive to familiar voices calling their names and will respond with a look or a smile. Does your child imitate other people? Children love to mimic movements, such as sticking out their lounges and making waving movements. If a child is not showing signs of doing this, then it may not be time to panic, but it also might be autistic behavior that you should mention to your child's physician.

It is important to remember that every child learns and exhibits different behaviors at different times. But it is also important to make sure that you are aware when a child is extremely slow in different areas. If you find that they are, then you should talk to your child's doctor and ask if they can do some testing for autism. Having this knowledge is very important and while many physicians might want to wait until the child is older to do testing, at least they will be aware that there might be a problem. The physician will be able to give more in-depth information about children with autism, and you can also do some research into the disorder, allowing you to be more prepared in the future, should the problems still exist.

Today's Tip On Autism

An autistic spectrum disorder can be first noticed in a child by the age of 3 and in many cases much earlier. It is normally the parent who is the first to notice the behaviors or at times, the lack of certain behaviors of their children. Children who are stricken by disorders of the autism spectrum act differently than other children and sometimes do so from birth. They are most often unresponsive to parents and other individuals and will focus on objects that are not of any relevance, for an extended period of time. The child may also show signs of changes as they develop. If a child was once able to focus and interact with parents and others by babbling and cooing and suddenly becomes resistant to socialization, then this could be a cause for concern.
